Will the role of the Fuels Industry in Europe’s secure and sustainable future be recognised in the Clean Industrial Deal?

The Clean Industrial Deal (CID) aims to harmonise climate ambitions with industrial competitiveness, focusing on Europe's key strategic sectors. The Fuel Manufacturing industry rightfully deserves a place on this shortlist, given its crucial role in ensuring a competitive and sustainable transition for the EU's industrial framework.

However, we anticipate that our sector may not be directly incorporated into the CID despite its indispensable contribution to Europe's security of supply, and our refineries transition being fundamental to the decarbonisation of major strategic industries—many of which are already facing challenges—petrochemicals, road transport, aviation, maritime shipping, defence, and various other industrial sectors.

If our transition is at risk, the transition of all these sectors will also be jeopardised. On the other hand, our transition creates unique opportunities in the circular economy, creating new value chains, jobs and local economies, while paving the way towards energy autonomy. The Fuel Manufacturing industry remains hopeful that the CID’s implementation will create opportunities to engage with policymakers for the preparation of a dedicated action plan to support our sector’s transition.
