The Russian war on Ukraine has exposed Europe's fragile energy security and dependence on Russian supplies. It has given European consumers a shock preview of the fuel price spikes that could characterize the energy transition unless policymakers adjust course.

Energy security is now a top priority for the European Union. Having a wide range of technologies for the transition to sustainable mobility enables a more resilient approach in the face of challenges such as limited availability of raw materials, geopolitical risks, dependence on no-EU countries, access to charging infrastructure and social acceptance.
