FuelsEurope welcomes the pragmatic programme for the next 5 years, announced by the re-elected President of the Commission

FuelsEurope congratulates Ms. Ursula von der Leyen for her re-election as President of the European Commission for another 5-year term.

FuelsEurope furthermore welcomes President von der Leyen’s determination to pursue the work started during her first term in the frame of the European Green Deal whilst bringing more pragmatism in her political vision by placing competitiveness, technology neutrality, research and innovation back at the heart of the policy making process, while reducing the regulatory burden.

Liana Gouta, Director General of FuelsEurope, commented “President von der Leyen’s first term ended with the start of dialogue with European industry, and the signing of the Antwerp Declaration. FuelsEurope, representing one of the most strategic and crucial EU industries, today and in the coming years towards the achievement of climate neutrality, very much welcomes her engagement to deliver a new Clean Industrial Deal for competitive industries and quality jobs in the first 100 days of the mandate, as well as the focus on Europe’s competitiveness.”

Moreover, FuelsEurope welcomes President von der Leyen’s engagement to support technology-neutrality for the development of innovative technologies that will together contribute to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Liana Gouta stated: “I particularly welcome President von der Leyen’s attention on the need for a technology-neutral approach in order to achieve the climate neutrality target for cars, and her intention to propose the recognition of e-fuels through a targeted amendment of the regulation as part of the foreseen review.” She added: “In this context, and based on the principle of technology neutrality, other technologies, such as sustainable and advanced biofuels should also be included in the review process, for both light- and heavy-duty vehicles, to the benefit of an accelerated, more effective and more affordable decarbonization of all transport sectors”.

FuelsEurope is ready to cooperate with the President von der Leyen’s new Commission and all institutions, to pave the way towards the achievement of carbon neutrality targets of all transport modes and other critical industrial sectors, by impact-assessing the relevant regulations and suggesting corrective actions, in order to unlock the technological and investment potential that the implementation of the Green Deal requires.
