As the EU advances its 2024-2029 political agenda, with competitiveness and simplification at its core, it is of utmost importance that the regulatory framework supports, rather than constrains, the sectors that underpin Europe’s energy security, mobility and industrial value chains.
FuelsEurope strongly supports the EU’s objective of simplifying legislation and improving regulatory coherence. A simpler, faster and more predictable regulatory framework is essential to strengthen Europe’s industrial base, attract investment, and ensure that the energy transition remains economically viable and resilient.
Our industry operates in a highly competitive global environment and faces an increasingly complex and overlapping regulatory landscape. While ambitious climate and environmental objectives are fully recognised, the accumulation of rules and administrative and reporting burden – often adopted without sufficient alignment or impact assessment – risks undermining investment certainty and industrial competitiveness.
The Commission’s February 2025 Communication “A Simpler, Faster Europe” rightly recognises the need to make EU legislation more effective and its implementation more efficient. This objective must explicitly address the realities faced by energy-intensive and strategically relevant industries.
FuelsEurope is actively engaged in all relevant Commission initiatives on simplification and omnibus proposals, providing the industry’s expert recommendations with a view to achieving a coherent and streamlined regulatory framework across all key policy areas that strengthens the business case for our companies, promotes innovation whilst ensuring Europe’s climate objectives are met.
