The Working Group on Monitoring Methodologies (WGMM) is a voluntary coalition bringing together 50+ stakeholders from across the automotive and fuels value chains, from vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers to fuel manufacturers, logistics operators, distributors and retailers.
Its objective is to help make the use of renewable fuels a credible and workable option within Europe’s transport decarbonisation framework. The WGMM examines how the use and CO₂ intensity of renewable fuels can be monitored, verified and accounted for in practice, while taking into consideration technical feasibility, regulatory enforceability, infrastructure, costs and consumer impact.
Following its assessment of 12 identified monitoring methodologies, the WGMM produced a comprehensive report aimed at supporting a pragmatic policy debate about the benefits of recognising vehicles exclusively supplied with renewable fuels as a complementary solution to LDVs electrification.
Through technical reports, events, stakeholder meetings and engagement with European institutions and Member States, the WGMM seeks to connect technical evidence with practical policy solutions. Its work has also expanded to the availability of sustainable feedstocks and the potential contribution of renewable fuels across road, aviation and maritime transport.
