Tour d’Europe

Tour d’Europe is a pan-European technology demonstration project designed to show how renewable fuels can contribute to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions from road transport. It brought together organisations from across the automotive and fuels value chains, including vehicle manufacturers, fuel producers, industry associations, technical experts and academics.

Its central objective was to demonstrate, in real-world conditions, the availability, usability and decarbonisation potential of renewable fuels in both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. By travelling across Europe, the project aimed to show citizens, policymakers and stakeholders that renewable fuels can be used in existing vehicles and through existing fuel infrastructure, alongside other solutions such as electrification and hydrogen.

The project also sought to demonstrate how the use of the fuel can be monitored and verified at vehicle level, including their CO₂ intensity. Vehicles participating in the road trip used a digital fuel twin to record and certify the renewable fuels used and the resulting well-to-wheel CO₂ reductions. This provided a practical basis for discussing how monitoring and certification could support future European legislation on vehicle CO₂ standards.

Beyond its technical dimension, Tour d’Europe created opportunities for dialogue with policymakers, local stakeholders, media and citizens in countries across Europe. Its broader objective was to support a technology-open approach to transport decarbonisation, strengthen awareness of renewable fuels and contribute to a policy framework that recognises all solutions capable of delivering verifiable emissions reductions.
